What to expect, when you’re expecting…A penguin.
Since its mention in march, there has been much speculation about the release of the new penguin update. Having watched a recent video by Google engineer Matt Cutts, I can verify that P day is drawing upon us, Cutts has confirmed that we can expect it within the next few weeks. Not to be mislead by the name, this penguin means business, it’s no pingu!
The purpose of the first penguin was to find and weed out websites that tried to trick Google by using now dubbed ‘Black-hat’ SEO techniques, such as: Keyword stuffing, duplicate content and participating in link schemes.
Still focusing on punishing websites that violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines by decreasing their search engine rankings, Cutts describes Penguin 2.0 as a ‘more comprehensive’ version of the previous release, they expect it to have a larger impact than the original version, meaning its going to be bigger and scarier.
So what can we expect? Well…unfortunately, I know as little as you do, Google keeps its cards close to its chest when its comes to its Algorithms.
Firstly Cutt’s talks about what we as Webmasters should be doing – Making a site that users love, tell their friends about, want to revisit and bookmark. ‘All the things that make a website compelling’ As long as you’re working hard for users, then there goal is to work alongside that and make sure your high quality content is shown to other users. It all sounds so simple doesn’t it? Below are a few little pieces of information shared in the video.
Matt addresses a problem he is noticing more of – paid advertising that is floating Pagerank and is not clearly distinguishable to users as being a paid advert. He states that there are going to be some stronger enforcements on those that break the quality guidelines as far as advertisements are concerned.
Google is going to be focusing strongly on denying value to link spammers, they are developing ways to make this technique less effective – Hang on though, didn’t we already know this?? Where is the new information that we have been anticipating, how are we supposed to prepare for the big bad penguin?! We are informed however, that they are working on a completely new ‘sophisticated system for link analysis’ – Oh dear.
It seems that Google is going to be getting stricter, with stronger enforcements and it intends to carry on punishing those who are not obeying the rules!
Its not all scary news. Fortunately they are looking at ways to reward sites that have authority in a certain area, Matt gives the example of Medical or Travel, they’re trying to make sure that these websites rank a little higher if they are believed to be more appropriate for the user according to the algorithm. There is also going to be more focus on helping smaller/medium businesses and regular webmasters!
Toward the end of the video Cutt’s reiterates that there are going to be bigger effects on those pesky link spammers, if you’re one of these, be prepared to be pecked by the penguin!
And that’s it! That was all that was given away in the video – I’m sorry I can’t provide you with more, my relationship with Matt is strictly vicarious through Youtube and Twitter …
Get ready people, its coming!
